As I reflect on my recent 10-Day Silent Meditation retreat and reintegrate into the “noise” of the busy world, I have been contemplating the subject of boundaries—more specifically, the lack of them and the inadequate understanding of what healthy boundaries are.

I spent my elementary school years among hundreds of other barefoot tootsies and digits.  As soon as we arrived at school each day, all of the students ripped velcro apart, untied laces, and freed our feet from our shoes.  It was my school's policy that all children must remain barefoot inside and outside during school hours.  This meant that my feet didn’t go back into their synthetic protectors until it was time for me to walk home.  It was like that for all seasons, all activities, including our outdoor gym classes and field days.

If you are not taking these basic steps daily, they are almost certainly contributing to your symptoms.  If you genuinely feel like your symptoms are life-threatening, by all means visit your local ER.  If not, hit pause for a few days and see if you can notice positive changes from increasing your level of attention to self-care.
